USCM, Columbia University eye defence-critical metals in red mud

US Critical Materials Corp. and Columbia University have launched a two-year research initiative called 'Mud to Metal' to extract defence-critical metals from red mud, a byproduct of aluminum refining. The collaboration aims to develop domestic sources of gallium, scandium, titanium, and rare earth elements currently imported from abroad. The effort will test various recovery techniques and assess their scalability and environmental impact.
