South Africa plans to expand its automotive incentive program to cover minerals used in electric-vehicle battery manufacturing, aiming to boost local EV production and strengthen related supply chains. The current list of "standard materials" eligible for incentives includes aluminum, steel and platinum group metals but excludes critical battery minerals. The review responds to the global shift toward EVs, tighter emissions rules and rising competition from low-cost imports, particularly from China and India.
