US Department of Energy awards $75M to recover critical minerals from coal feedstocks

The US Department of Energy's Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation announced $75 million for five projects that use coal and coal-based feedstocks to produce rare earth elements and other critical materials. The pilot-scale facilities will produce market-ready materials including rare earths, germanium, gallium and aluminum at domestic industrial sites. The awards fall under the Mines & Metals Capacity Expansion program to strengthen US critical mineral supply chains.
