The new US ambassador to New Zealand and several Pacific island nations said securing Cook Islands seabed minerals is a top priority, warning that China's push for influence in the Pacific carries risks for small island states. The Cook Islands government has allowed exploration of its cobalt- and nickel-rich seabed nodules but not yet commercial extraction.
